The reading mainly talks about the problem of Salton Sea in California that the salinity has been increasing steadily because of the rapid evaporation rate. The reading proposed three solution to decrease this high evaporation rate.
However, the listening challenges what are stated in the passage by providing three strong reason. Firstly, in the reading it is said that the one method is direct removal salt by special desalination facilities. But in contrast, the professor holds an opposite view and she says that would be dangerous health problems. Since, by evaporating water and changing it into steam some solid materials would be left behind. Some of these materials like Selenium are toxic and wind can spread them to air. So, it can cause some serious health problems.
Secondly, the passage asserts that dilute the salt level with water from ocean is another option. However, the professor maintains an opposite opinion and she says this solution is unrealistic and very expensive and the government may not have enough money for pipelines or canals to bring water from ocean. Moreover, the nearest ocean to lake is more than 100 kilometer far away.
Finally, the author of reading passage proposed a solution that is dividing the lake by constructing walls and directing water from small rivers to control salinity. On the other hand, the professor disagree with this and she says the lake is located in place where the geological activities are frequent and intense. And this method does not work in long term because the earthquake will divide the walls and the water from smaller section may mix back.
