In this set of materials, the reading passage mainly discusses about some ways could be useful to decreasing the amount of salt in a salty lakes water which is located in California, while in the listening passage the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text. However, the lecturer thinks these are neither realistic nor practical and proceeds to cast doubt upon them.
First of all, in the reading passage, it is clearly stated that one way is using a particular equipment which can covey lakes water by pumping, distill it, and then release it to the lake. However, the professor believes that this is not true. She claims that remaining things with this essayist mixture of salt and toxic materials which is very harmful because it can be carried by wind, as a consequence people breathe it.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that adding the pacific oceans water to the lake by canals and pipelines can be practical. She points out that this solution is really expensive and the local government do not have enough money to support is because ocean is one hundred kilometers far from the salty lake, as a result the local government has to pay a lot of money which is more than its income, therefor this way is impossible also.
Finally, although in the text it is mentioned that constructing some walls in the lake and dividing lake to some parts could be a good suggestion because they can direct freshwater from small rivers to main part and by allowing to small part of the lake to be salty more and more, fishes and birds can have normal life in main part, the professor subscribes to this view that its a short term solution because this wall swill be destroyed by earthquake so it is not a good way for long perspective.
