TPO 55 Writing 1Because of climate change, more and more land that was once used to grow crops or provide food for animals is turning to dry, unusable desert land. There are many proposals about how to stop this process, known as desertification. A number
The main idea of both the passage and the talk is whether box-shaped devices can be effective for desertification or not. In the text, the author claims that using box-shaped devices will not be successful in fighting against desertification and provides three reasons for its claim. The lecturer challenges all the mentioned arguments and believes that none of them is convincing.
Firstly, the author states that using the box-shaped devices is an expensive process. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that box-shaped devices are usable for many trees rather than one tree. In this regard, governments can use these devices for other young trees after trees become larger. These devices are usable at least for 20 trees. Thus, by considering the above-mentioned points, the cost for the box-shaped devices seems more reasonable.
Moreover, the author asserts that local people are not interested in installing and maintaining the box-shaped devices since they are affected by desertification work long days in harsh conditions. The speaker, on the contrary, points out that utilizing some ways can motivate local people. First, if they have been allowed to use devices for other purposes, such as for vegetation, they are able to increase their annual production. Second, the big and large trees give this opportunity for farmers to use the trees' branch as a firewood.
Eventually, the passage holds the opinion that the devices' ability to collect and conserve water is limited. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that devices provide a situation for trees to have a long roots. In this regard, trees enable to use the moist soils beneath the surface and thrive. For instance, in the Sahara desert, the previous experiment's results have shown trees are able to sustain in such a harsh environment.
