memoir that was written by Chevalier de Seingalt
The main idea of both the reading and the talk is about whether memoir that was written by Chevalier de Seingalt is accurate historical resource or not. In the text, the author of the reading claims that there some doubts about the reliability of memoir. The lecturer challenges all the viable examples that mentioned in the reading. She is of the opinion that all of these critics is unfair.
Firstly, the author of the reading states that when Chevalier was living in Switzerland was not wealthy because he borrowed money from other people. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that he was very wealthy, and he invested a plethora of money on gambling and parties. Because his money was not in cash, he borrowed money from his friends to exchange his asset to cash.
In addition, the author believes that the conversation records between Chevalier and famous writer , namely Voltaire, are not accurate. The lecturer, on the other hand, asserts that there are plenty piece of paper that shown Chevalier took note every night before his meeting with famous writer. Thus, because he had numerous note about his meeting, his memoir is reliable. Thus, by using these notes, the memoir could be written accurately.
Eventually, the article notes that the story that was written about Chevalier escape from prison by using a piece of metal is not reliable. The lecturer, conversely, brings up the idea that there are many other powerful prisoner in the Venice prison, if they had chanced to bribed to jailers, they would have escaped from prison. Furthermore, she mentions that there is a fact that show the ceiling of prison repaired after Chevalier escaped from prison.
