The reading passage and the lecture are both about the use of a device that can help grow trees and thereby, stopping desertification. More specifically, the writer discusses why this device will not be a success. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. She believes implementing the device will be convincing and worthwhile.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that the process of growing trees using the device would be unreasonable due to its high cost. The lecturer, however, disagrees with this viewpoint. He states that the device can be removed every time a young tree grows, and then can be reused up to 20 times. This makes the cost of all devices that will be needed for the process become affordable, considering the large number of trees they can help grow.
Second, the author claims that it is difficult to encourage the local people to help install and maintain the devices because the trees will not provide them food. Again, the lecturer believes that there are flaws in the writer’s argument. She holds that there are some rewards that will motivate the residents to support the device. She explains not only can they use the water collected by the device for cultivating crops, the local can also make use of tree branches for firewood when the trees fully grow.
Finally, the author believes that the device's ability is limited as they cannot provide enough water when the trees outgrow them. The speaker is doubtful that this is accurate. She suggests that the box-shape of the device will support the trees to develop long roots that can run deep to the underground and reach the layer of resources for their survival. She mentions an experiment that has proven most of the trees still thrive after the box is removed.
In conclusion, both the writer and lecturer hold conflicting views about the implement of this box-shaped device.
