tpo 60: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific theories mentioned in the reading passage

Passage:
Although the sale of rhinoceros horns is illegal worldwide, rhinoceroses (Rhinos) are commonly poached (hunted illegally) for their horns, which can be sold for tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram. Rhino horns are so valuable that one type of rhino is already extinct because poachers killed too many of them. All rhinos may soon become extinct unless something is done to help save them. Several ideas have been suggested

The reading suggests three solutions to save rhinoceroses from being hunted for their horns. But the lecture disputes all given solutions, points out their weaknesses, and shows why these given solutions are not practical or beneficial.

First, The professor says that the reading's suggestion to dishorn Rhinos is both impractical and dangerous to the Rhinos' survival. It is impractical because experts would have to first find Rhinos in the wild and then prepare them for surgery, which would need a lot of time and money; therefore, it is not a practical solution. Moreover, it is wrong because Rhinos use their horns to dig for water, obtain food, protect their territory, and more. So dehorning them, as the reading suggests, would put them at a disadvantage in the wild.

Second, the professor points out that convincing people to abandon their old and strong beliefs is very hard. So it is quite unlikely that educating consumers would result in changing their ancient ideas about how horns are good for their health. Thus, the reading suggestion to decrease the demand for rhino horn through educating consumers is a weak solution.

Third, the lecturer asserts that if the government follows the author's advice and legalizes selling rhino horn, it might have unpredictable consequences. For instance, if acquiring horn becomes acceptable, then more people, who are not buying horn right now because it is an illegal trade, might be encouraged to buy rhino horn. The increased demand might, in turn, cause the price to goes higher; therefore, a larger market for rhino horn might be formed. So, the reading's last solution is not a convincing one either.
