The article proposes three possible benefits of creating a new type of broccoli that can grow on the east coast: cheaper cost, desired characteristics and a healthier broccoli. The lecture, on the other hand, believes that creating a new variety of broccoli does not represent benefits to consumers.
First and foremost, to reduce the higher cost of producing broccolis on the west coast, the author of the article states that creating resistant broccolis to hotter climate allows to get nearly the harvest of broccoli and emphasizes its impact on the producing cost for transportation. The speaker, however, questions if this is correct and notes that although growing a new broccoli on the east coast reduces the costs for transportation the productivity of new variety of broccoli will generate lower yields than those grown on the west coast as a result the farmers sell new broccoli at a higher price and then the money saved for transportation will be cancel.
Second, the author emphasizes that the new type of broccoli would have desirable properties to consumers and says that for creating the new type of broccoli will not use a genetic modification technology. The speaker, on the other side, who refutes this assertion, claims that consumers will be suspicious even if the new broccoli is based on traditional breeding techniques and states that this project have financial support for the same companies who in the past created genetic modification crops and as a consequence all US consumers will distrust this kind of projects.
Finally, the author claims that having closer hardest of broccoli allows to consumers eat healthier broccolis since vegetable retain most of their benefits when they are eating right after to hardest them. In contrast, the speaker says that this particular argument is not sufficient to create a new type of broccoli and notes that exist other kind of local vegetable that can eat more sooner as for example kale, a leafy green vegetable on the east.
