Both the reading and the lecture are about the reduction of the sea otters which are small mammals, lives in across the western coast of North America and they have positive effect on environment. This population has recently declined. The reading provides three reasons that the main culprit of this occurrence is the pollution. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor finds all arguments dubious and she believes that predators play a vital role in decreasing of the sea otters.
First of all, the author of reading declares that researchers have surveyed the water samples of these coasts in Alaska and they could have discovered that level of chemical materials like oil or ring and other sources of petroleum have been increased in these waters; consequently, this pollution has affected the sea otters' life. This point is challenged by the lecture. The professor claims that any dead sea otters did not find in the coast; as a result, it can empower the predator hypothesis. If there were not dead sea otters in the coast, the predators would pray them.
Secondly, the reading contends that there are other animals that have declined in these areas and this event shows that the pollution has had a negative impression on their life. The predators like orcas cannot be the cause of this decline because they would rather prey large animals as whale. This point is rebutted by the professor. She believes since the whales have being preyed by humans; hence their population has been decreased. It goes without saying the orcas have changed their diet to small mammals like see otters and others.
Finally, the reading passage proposes that an uneven pattern of otter decline has strengthened pollution theory. On the other hand, the professor expresses that sea otters usually prefer to live in shallow areas; however, the favorite area for orcas are the large areas. In some areas that there is a huge decline of sea otters, it is possible that orcas have progressed to shallow waters for finding food and in other areas they have preferred to find their food in deep waters.
