The authors of the reading passage argue that the decrease in reading literature is detrimental to the culture and society. The lecturer, however, refutes the arguments presented in the reading passage due to the following reasons.

First, literature is not the only intellectual genre. Books of other categories such as science and politics are also creative and, if not less, as stimulation as literature. This apparently contradicts with the reading's statement that "by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits".

Second, novels and poems are not the only cultural materials. There are numerous perfect movies and songs which are by no means a waste of time. Here comes another contradiction with the assertion of the reading passage that the level of culture has been lowered as people have become interested in forms of entertainment other than reading.

Third, modern authors' books are difficult to understand. Even the people who were into reading literature in past would not choose to read these books. On the contrary, the reading's authors assert that the perfect novels created by talented artists are being depreciated, and hence, their chances to get published are spoiled.

To sum up, the professor believes that the arguments of the reading passage are not compelling, and the decrease in the number of literature readers does not have a negative impact on the public.
