Although the passage introduces three main hypotheses to support the fact that birds population has been decreased in the United State recently and this trend will be continued in the future, the professor finds all the reasons dubious and brings up three conspicuous points to refute them all.
Considering the first point, the reading material argues that human population expand causes vanishing the bird’s habitat such as wetlands and forests and convert them to the places for human settlements. However, the speaker finds it unconvincing and asserts that urban growth has increased bird’s population. Although it has declined some birds’ population, it has increased some other type of birds throughout the cities.
Furthermore, the reading passage claims that with increase in human population, the demands for more food enhances and the agricultural activities will be increased which results in more wild lands become agricultural lands. In contrast, the lecturer states that United States has recently used fewer lands to grow more crops which means no more lands should be used for agricultural activities.
Eventually the author holds the view that using toxic pesticides and chemical materials to prevent harmful insects and species for crops results in water pollution which birds use. It also causes birds stop breeding. Whereas the speaker contends that the effect of pesticides were important in past but in future the use of pesticides will be decreased due to the fact it has changed a lot. Not only are new pesticides less toxic but also they are genetically improved which birds can use them without any harm.
