TPO21- Integrated Task

The reading and the lecture are both about genetically modified trees. Whereas the author of the reading states that breeding genetically modified trees is beneficial, the lecturer suggests that although there may be some benefits about it, it has many disadvantages. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, the modified trees are more resistant and they have a greater chance to survive in different conditions. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She says that the genetically changed trees may be resistant to just one particular condition and they can not survive in various circumstances. Furthermore, she mentions that compared to genetically modified trees that have similar genes, natural trees are genetically diverse. It means that, in contrast to modified trees in different difficulties like climate changes, some resistant natural trees can survive.
Secondly, the reading states that modified trees have some economic advantages because they can grow faster and have more harvests. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that these altered trees have many hidden costs. To explain more, she points out the companies need to charge more farmers for these kinds of trees because by law farmers need to pay the company every time they plant the seeds.
Finally, the reading claims that the improved trees can survive wild trees to be cut down due to fire and building requirements. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that these trees can more damage the natural one. She thinks that since the modified trees are grown between natural trees they will compete with them for resources like water.
