Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the argument that did actually the Peary reach the North Pole or not. While the reading part lists some reasons as the possible adherences for the validity of this event, the professor counters these specific points and presents some clues to call into the question for the information in the passage.

First, the article mentions to the conclusion of National Geographic Society committee based on the Peary's investigation records, which supports this event. However, the instructor casts doubt on the accuracy of this conclusion. As she asserts the survey and its conclusion are biased and invalid. First of all, the committee was the best friend of Peary who financially supports the Peary's investigations. In addition, the survey was conducted solo in two days which is an insufficient amount of time for doing a careful examination.

Next, meanwhile, the text refers to the Avery's trek, which in the less than 37 days he sleds to the North Pole, as one of the feasibilities of this incident. On the contrary, the professor challenges this reference. As she states the conditions on these two treks differ from each other; inasmuch as the Avery sledded with less weight because his foods are carried by an airplane. In addition, the weather condition in the Avery's trip was so favorable condition which helped the Avery to trek in the less than 37 days. In the contrast, the Peary carried his foods by himself, and weather condition was harsh.

Last, the passage posits to the shadow of a photograph as an evidence of the Peary's travel. Nonetheless, the lecturer refutes the validity of this picture. Based on her assertion, the measurement of the shadow for identifying the location requires a very precisely examination. Besides, this photo is edited during these 100 years. As a result, the photo is too fussy and the shadow is blurred which unable the precise examination of the picture. Thus, information conducted by the shadow of the picture is inaccurate.
