In this set of material, the article suggests the migration hypothesis for Edmontosaurus, which explains how this dinosaur was capable of surviving the harsh weather at Alaska's North Slope. The passage states three arguments which are the diet, the herd living and the physical capability of migration. However, the professor disagrees with the reading and provides three convincing reasons as the following.
First, the author states that those dinosaurs were vegetation animals, they fed on plants only; therefore, they have to migrate to another place during the cold weather when there was no plan capable of growing. While the professor rebuffs this idea by stating that the climate of North Pole where warmer at the time of dinosaurs and the sun rises at the North Slope about 24 hours in summer, Obviously, the area was rich with plants most of the time. Moreover, at winter, there would be plenty of dead plants sufficient to feed those dinosaurs.
Second, the reading suggests that those dinosaurs lived in many herds and most of the recent animals who are living in herds, and this characteristic helps them to migrate in the group. However, the professor believes that even though those animals lived in groups as a flock, it was not necessary to help them migrated. There are other large animals like Roosevelt Elks usually live as a herd to provide protection from predators. So they did not migrate.
Third, the reading suggests the physical skeleton structure was also another supported reason for migration theory because Edmontosaurus's physical body enabled dinosaurs in that area to locomote and run fast.Although the professor casts doubt this idea also, he believes that their body would help adult animals to run fast and what about those young they can not leave them behind alone. Therefore, they must stay and live the winter in the cold Slop.
