The reading passage mentions to extinction ‘s reasons of huge mammal, Steller’s sea cows which Bering Island was their inhabit and for first time reported by W.Steller, an European naturalist in 1741. While the reading uses three theories to more clarification, the professor argues the mentioned theories by reading passage.
In first place, the professor says that first theory which suggests over-hunting this animal by natives as a reason for sea cows extinction, doesn’t seem acceptable because these animals that own large size and weight, couple of them would be enough for Siberian people who population was in low rate. Therefore, over-hunting as a theory cannot support the main reason of this event.
Secondly, ecosystem disturbances which appears as a second theory, rejected by professor because a phenomena like ecosystem disturbances effects all animals life like whales but there is no evidence that reports about other animals. Furthermore, sea cows never faced with food lacking. Consequently, second theory doesn’t seem logical to prove the reasons of mentioned extinction.
Finally, trade like fur trade explains as third theory. While the passage claims that European started to hunt sea cows for fur trade after 1741 and this business caused a dramatic diminish in the mentioned animals population, professor thinks this concept cannot response to present problem due to evidence which demonstrates that before European coming their population’s volume was in low amount.
