TPO34 sea cow
In the passage, the author provides three theories that may lead to the extinction of the sea cow. However, in the lecture, the professor thinks the passage is full of holes, and he opposes that from all three aspects.
To begin with, in the passage, the author simply states that the sea cows may have been overhunted by native people for food. Nevertheless, in the lecture, the professor holds the view that the sea cow is usually big and weighs up to ten tons so that it is difficult for the native to catch. Moreover, the sea cows are massive, and the number of local people is not large, so there is no need for them to hunt many.
The second point the professor refutes is ecosystem disturbances. In the passage, the author illustrates that kelp which is the sea cow's main food has declined so that the sea cows do not have much food to eat, leading to the extinction. But in the lecture, the professor raises the evidence that other kinds of fish which also feed on kelp do not decrease. Thus, it is not convinced to draw the conclusion.
Finally, the last evidence the professor adopts to challenge the passage is fur trade. In the passage, the author makes point that the sea cow is nearly extinct just when the European came. On the contrary, in the lecture, the professor states that the sea cow has been declined hundreds times less than several years before, so it is none of European's business.
To sum up, the passage is not logically sound according to the statement in the lecture.
