In this set of material, the reading and lecture discuss about Triassic period in 200 million years ago. In this time occurred a mass-extinction and a lot of species died in a short period of time. The text provides three theories to help for explanation of this event; however the professor finds all arguments dubious. In fact the information the lecture tenders contradict the fact outlined in the article.

First, the author of reading declares that the decline of sea level caused species and their habitats and also the food chain to destroy in near the end of Triassic period; in the contrast the lecture claims that this reduction in sea level was gradual and the scientists believe that with such low speed, the negative impacts could have revealed after 1 million years later.

Second, the reading passage proposes that it is plausible that a change in weather could have helped in this extinction. It explains that the volcanoes probably released large amount of S02 to atmosphere. As we all know, S02 can cause climate to become more cool; on the contrary the lecture contends that after a short time S02 can mix with atmosphere and create rain; hence this S02 is not be able to remind for a long time in the air.

Third, the article expresses that an asteroid could have hit to Earth and its debris could have covered atmosphere for a long time to prevent from arriving sunlight to Earth; conversely the professor again refutes this suggestion and she professes that scientists have found some crates related with these types of asteroids; however the debris which have found in these crates are not related with Triassic period, but they have been dated to centuries before Triassic period.
