The reading specifies that there are three different theories that explain how agnostids may live in the past. The professor, however, explains that the theories have serious problems and provide some evidence to refute them all.
First, the passage asserts that the agnostids were strong swimmers predators that looking for smaller animal and hunt them because other types of primitive arthropods were free swimming and active predators. In contrast, the professor opposes the idea by saying that animal who swim and chase other animals have a well developed eye. On the other hands, the agnostids have tiny eye and sometime were blind. Also, researcher did not find and sense organic in the agnostide that help them to chase other species and it is not possible to consider them predators.
Second, according to the reading, the agnostids like the other types of primitive arthropods have dwelled on the seafloor. eating dead organisms or gazing on bacteria helps them to survive. Conversely, the lecturer states that the seafloor dwellers move very slowly and they stay on local area. But the agnostids were spread in a long distance and they have the ability to move very fast. Therefore, they were not subsist on the seafloor.
Third, based on the reading, the agnostids were parasites which living on and feeding off larger organisms. The reason is that there are many types of modern day arthropods that exist as parasites. Nevertheless, the population of agnostids were limit because if there were high, they kill all the organism on the sea. Moreover, the record of their great size do not say that they were parasites.
