The reading passage suggests that there are an array of problems to solve if scientists want to send humans to Mars. And in the lecture, the professor explains the problems and provides solutions for the specific problems.
Firstly, regarding the concern that the space vehicles isn't large enough to carry the food, water and oxygen for the astronauts for at leas two years, the professor points out that there is a solution called hydrophilic. Instead of carrying all of the food with themselves, the astronauts can cultivate the plants in the water, which requires little space compared with soil. Furthermore, these plants will not only provide the food the astronauts need, but also recycle the wasted water and release oxygen. With these plants growing in the space vehicles, the astronauts don't need to worry about the food, water and oxygen any more.
Secondly, the professor also provides the evidence that the astronauts can live in a zero-gravity environment for a long time. To avoid the negative effects such as decreased muscle mass or the lower bone density, the astronauts can do more regular exercises, which proved successful by the astronauts who lived in the space for several months.
Finally, for the problem that the solar radiation might be dangerous for the astronauts without the protection of the earth's magnetic field, the professor mentions that this kind of radiation is not in fatal level all the time -- only when the sun is particular active will the radiation reach the fatal level. What's more, there is also an option to protect the astronauts when the solar radiation is too large. Although constructing a shield for the whole spaceship doesn't make sense since it would add too much weight, the scientists can build up a smaller shielded area and a monitor instrument for the astronauts. When they find the radiation meet up the dangerous level via the monitor, they can hide in the shielded space.
