The article claims that when a professor appears on television as a guest to deliver expert commentary on the latest events in the world the professors themselves, university and the general public gets benefited from it. The lecturer disagrees. He goes on to say that this can be beneficial sometimes but there ase serious shortcomings with it.
Firt, the author says that when a professor appears on TV, general public gets to know his idea which were previously known only to other academic fellows. The lecturer believes that there are flaws to this argument. He contends that instead a professor will not be considered seriously by other academic fellows. He goes on to say that he we are not invited to conferences, meetings and even will not be awarded any money for his research because his sole purpose is entertainment.
Secondly, the author claims that universities also benefit by this due to its increased reputation. This will lead to more donations and more application from potential students. Again, the lecturer refutes this point by saying that this time wasted on TV appearances can be utilized in doing research, focusing on university's business and meeting students to help them.
The author also states that public gains from professor's appearance. They have a chance to learn and get insight about the real expertise in the field. The lecturer, however, disagrees with his viewpoint. He holds that the TV are just expecting academic title in their shows but not profound insights about professor's expertise. Also, the public doesn't expect deep technical knowledge in the field. He says that this type of speech can also be delivered by TV reporter with little bit of study.
