In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss whether the company would offer a policy to work 4 days work week on the demand of many employees who are willing to accept less pay. The former suggests that this 4days work week would be beneficial for both the economy, employer and the employees itself for three reasons, but the lecture contradict each of these points.
First of all, the authors contends that 4 days work in a week will give the employees enough time to rest, become more focused and avoid costly errors on their work which will lead to more profit for the company. In contrast, the lecturer contradicts that this policy will actually increase the expenditure of a company. He also states that, 4 days work week requires more employees to cover for the 5 days task which will lead to hire more employees, more space and training and medical benefit for those employees will increase the expenditure will lead to less profit.
Second of all, the passage states that this policy will create more job opportunities which will decrease the unemployment rate of that economy. However, the listening rebuts that this 4 days work week policy might not create any new job opportunity perhaps employer may ask their employee to work overtime. He also mention, This policy might increase the employers expectation that 4 days work week employees will do work with same efficiency what they used to do in 5 days which will create an unpleasant situation within managers and staffs.
Finally, the text claims that individuals will get enough free time to spend with their family. On the other hand, the professor avers that this 4 days work week policy might decrease the job stability of that individuals. He also states this policy is not good for career growth as employee might consider 5days worker instead of 4 days worker in their most of the managerial position.
