Essay topics:

In the united states, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours, however many employees want to work a four day week

Typically, the US employee spends five days a week working 8 hours per day.
The reading suggests that having an employee to work for 4 days is beneficial to individual company, economy overall, and individuals themselves . While the lecture strongly refutes this for the following reasons
First, the reading mentions that companies can hire more people without adding to the payroll cost and also will have more profit because their employees are more rested and alert so less overworked and error prone. The lecture however challenges this by mentioning that the medical benefits and training has the same cost to the employee who works 4 days or 5 days a week. Also hiring more employee to have the same outcome requires more offices and computers. This collectively will add more costs and cut to the companies’ profits. The benefit to companies is therefore not well founded.
Second, the reading claims that it will decrease the unemployment rates by creating more jobs for every 4 employees with 80% payroll there will be one employee to be hired. So that will benefit the country economy. the lecture challenges this by mentioning that the companies will use other options to avoid the costs of hiring new employees due to the reason mentioned before. For example, The companies will raise the example they will raise the expectations and require the four days employees to be as productive as they used to be when they were working five days a week. They will also let their employees work overtime to make up for the difference in their outcome.
Finally, the reading thinks that it will give employees more free time to improve the quality of their lives by spending more time with their families and pursue private interests. meanwhile the lecture thinks the opposite. That it will reduce their quality of lives. For instance, working less hours will decrease their job abilities and decrease the chance of advancing in their careers because they will be passed on in promotions because companies will hire more consistent five days employees because they need someone to be supervising all week.
