In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full- time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four- day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
Both the reading and the listening talks about the benefits and downside of four-day work week policy requested by the employees. The former provides possible improvements in the life of the employee having a four-day work week, but the latter talks about the issues the policy will create.
First of all, the passage suggests that the employees who work for four day a week will feel more relaxed and their work would be more accurate for 80 percent of their salary and with this the company can hire more staff and the company profits will increase. However, the professor in the lecture contends that there would be additional costs with hiring more employees and less profit for the company as the company will have to look after the training and the medical benefit of the new employee. The company would require more work space and also more computer that would further increase the money spent by the company.
Second of all, the passage mentions that with this policy in action the unemployment rate in the country will decrease exponentially. On the other hand, the professor argues that this policy will not create new job availability as the company will expect the employee to complete the task in 4 days which they normally did in 5 days. This will require the employees to sometime work overtime in turn make their job more unpleasant compared to the current situation.
Finally, the passage talks about the betterment in the quality of life of the employee who can work with a lower salary. Nevertheless, like the two suggestions before, the professor in the lecture proclaims that this is not beneficial to the employees because, the company will try to promote an employee who can continue the progress and also supervise for five days instead of 4 days. The professors also mentions that these employees won't have any stability as they will be the first to be fired during a crisis.
