The lecturer discouraged the usage of social media by mentioning the risks associated with it. Whereas ,the passage supports the use of social media by highlighting the way social media has changed the people’s lives.
According the passag e, with the advent of social media and new technologies that made it possible for the people to interact with the people from all over the world and they are building bonds and relationships with a wide variety of people. However the lecturer points out the harms of using the social media by explaining the ways how peoples personal information and confidential information can be stolen through varies forms cyber activities Like the fishing.
Secondly the lecturer states that the people are having less number of close friends with whom they can share the personal information by supporting his claims by mentioning the analysis from a survey conducted by duke university sociologists which says that average number of close acquaintances of people have reduced from 3 in 1985 to 2 in 2004. The passage didn’t argue on this claims instead it choose to support the social media by mentioning the how the people are able to meet the people of similar tastes.
The lecturer also points out that online communities shared interests are short lived and it’s only the communities that we have around us will live with us forever. On this point the passage doesn’t make any remarks.
In this way the lecturer and the passage explain the merits and demerits of using social media respectively without particularly pointing fingers at each other. Whereas the lecture focuses mainly on risks, the reading passage focuses on convincing the reader that the rewards outweigh the risks.
