Would airships become popular again?
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to the future of the air transportation. More specifically, in regards to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that airships would become popular again. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writers claims. In fact, the professor believes that airships also have their own basic problems which are comparable to their benefits, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that since airships need to use their engines only when
moving horizontally, they usually consume less fuel than other aircrafts, so they costs less. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states that airships have some particular costs in addition to normal costs, which shoud be considered. He goes on to say that filling the ballon with a lighter-than-air gas shoud be dangerous in case of using Hydrogen, or expensive and less efficient if Helium is being selected.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks that being able to fly vertically and also to carry large loads simultaneously, makes an airship a suitable choice for some special cargo, like carrying logs from forests to industries. Of course, though, not all experts in this field believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker spesifically, addresses this point when he states airships can't go up or down steadily enough to be used for these operations. they need to be consistent during the whole operation not to cause any accident, that is totally in doubt since airships are truely affected by the wind.
Finally, the author wraps his argumemt by positing that airships can even be used instead of sattelites as they can stay solidly in the air with no fuel consumption, and their technology are a way cheaper than satellites. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that airships can stand stable in a limited range of altitude, briefly say, below forty kilometers uppon the earth's surface. He also mentioned that even regardless to the height problem, airships gas need to be changed frequently in order to hold the craft work normally.
