The author provides some explanations about the impossibility of sending humans to Mars. However, the lecturer asserts that scientists have found solutions for the problems provided in the reading passage.
First, the author states that trip to Mars lasts for about two years, and the astronauts need oxygen, water, and food; but the cargo capacity is limited to carry enough food, water, and oxygen for two years. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that astronauts can use hydroponics technique to produce water, oxygen, and food. Hydroponics is a method to grow plants in water instead of soil. After growing plants, they can provide enough food also they can recycle waste water to produce clean water. Furthermore, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. So, food, oxygen, and water can be provided for astronauts accordingly.
Second, the writer remarks that the zero-gravity environment can harm the astronauts by reducing muscle mass and lowering bone density. However, the speaker asserts that astronauts attended many different trips, so they have learned to overcome these problems. In fact, they know regular exercises can help them to maintain their muscle mass; besides, they may consume vitamins and minerals such as calcium to preserve their bone density.
Finally, the author states that astronauts would be exposed to dangerous space radiation that could be harmful for them. Furthermore, making and using a protective shield is not possible since it would add too much weight to the ship. Conversely, the lecturer points out that radiations emitted from the Sun are not always dangerous. In fact, dangerous levels of radiation are emitted during the most active times of the Sun. So, the astronauts may use a special device to monitor harmful radiations, and when this device detects harmful radiations, astronauts can use a small and lightweight shield. In addition, they can continue their trip without using the shield when the device does not detect detrimental radiation.
