TPO 30 question 1
The author opposes the idea that the Greek made the burning mirror to set fire in offensive ships. On the other hand, the professor argues that there evidences that proof that the Greek had made such wipon.
First, the speaker states that it is not necessary to make the mirror from a long or large sheet of copper. Recnetly, scientists made such large sheet of copper from small mirror that collected together to make the parabolic curvature which is necessary to set a fire. Thus, the Greek may make such wipon from such small mirror. In contrast, the writer explains it is not possible that the Greek could make such a large and wide sheet of copper that has parabolic curvature.
Second, the professor tells us that to set a fire in a ship, does not need ten mintues because ships at that time made not only from wood, but also from other materials like a sticky substace called pitch. The latter can catch fire in seconds even if a ship is moving. The author, however, questions the effectiveness of the wepon by explaining that wood of the ships needs at least ten mintues to catch a fire as an experiment have been done by scientists.
Finally, the professor mentions that the Greek wanted to surprise their enemies with a new, unusual weapon. Arows with fire were very familiar and enemies could notice them easily and could defend themseleves quickly. However, enemies cannot detect or observe the fire that could be caused by the bruning mirror. Therefore, the Greek bother themselves to surprise their enemies with unexpected weapon. On the contrary, the writer states that arows with fire have the same efficacy as the burning weapon. Therefore, he doubtes that the Greek would bother themselves by making such weapon.
