The article states that the ethanol fuel is not a good replacement for gasoline and provides three reasons of supports. However, the professor says that the ethanol is a good an alternative to gasoline in the United States and refutes each of the author’s supports.
First, the reading claims that the ethanol does not offer an environment advantage over gasoline like global warming because ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The professor refutes this point by explaining that is true the ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the air when it is burned but the growing plants are counteract this process. When these plants grow, they absorbed the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as nutrients and that consumption of carbon dioxide would dramatically reduce the heat in the air.
Second, the passage states that the production of significant amounts of ethanol would dramatically reduce the amount of plants available and as a result decrease the food for animals. In contrast, the professor says that the high production of ethanol does not have to reduce the sources of food for animals. He explains that we can produce ethanol by using cellulose, which can be found in plants that are not eaten by animals.
Third, the reading posits that the ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price because if the government stop helping the producers in the form of tax subsidies given to ethanol, the price of ethanol would increase greatly. The lecture refutes this point by stating that in the future ethanol will be able to compete with gasoline in term of price, even though the government subsidies makes the ethanol cheaper. Moreover, the price of ethanol will go down as more of its production available because increase production of a product led to a drop in its price.
- Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your ans 70
