The reading provides three reasons to support the hypothesis which claims that Edmontosurus had been migrated to survive the cold winters of North Pole. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and provides some points to refute them all.
First, the author claims that this kind of dinosaurs needed to eat huge amount of plant to survive and since in the winter, there was no plant in the North Pole, so, they should migrate to south. Conversely, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by stating that the warmer weather condition of the pole on that time and the 24 hour of son light provided an opportunity for vegetation to grow fast during the summer. So, in the winter these animals was able to eat the dead plant which remained from summer growing time.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that some evidence clearly shows that Edmontosaurus lived in the herd and as like of modern animals that live in the herd they migrated during the winter time. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that living in herd does not show the animals should migrate. Generally speaking, animals choose this kind of life because it can provide several advantages for their life. For example, they can experience extra protection. Moreover, there are animals that lives in the herd and do not migrate during the winter, so, we cannot conclude that all animals how live in the herd change their location during the bad weather conditions.
Finally, the reading assert that this kind of dinosaur was physically capable for long migration toward the south. In the contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that although adult animals was able to migrate, the juvenile Edonotosaurus was not strong enough to pass this long distance. So, they did not migrate during the winter because they could not leave their child alone.
