In 1938 an archaeologist in Iraq acquired a set of clay jars that had been excavated two years earlier by villagers constructing a railroad line. The vessel was about 2,200 years old. Each clay jay contained a copper cylinder surrounding an iron rod. The archaeologist proposed that vessel were ancient electric batteries and even demonstrated that they can produce a small electric current when filled with some liquids. However, it is not likely that the vessels were actually used as electric batteries in ancient times.
First of all, if the vessels were used as batteries, they would probably have been attached to some electricity conductors such as metal wires. But there is no evidence that any metal wires were located near the vessels. All that has been excavated are the vessels themselves.
Second, the copper cylinders inside the jarslook exactly like copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of Seleucia, an ancientcity located nearby. We know that the copper cylinders from Seleucia were used for holding scrolls of sacred texts, not for generating electricity. Since the cylinders found with the jars have the same shape, it is very likely they were used for holding scrolls as well. That no scrolls were found inside the jars can be explained by the fact that the scrolls simply disintegrated over the centuries.
Finally, what could ancient people have done with the electricity that the vessels were supposed to have generated? They had no devices that replied on electricity. As batteries, the vessels would have been completely useless to them.
The article states that some clay jars are excavated in Iraq by villagers which contained a copper cylinder surrounding an iron rod which the archialogost proposed that vessels were ancient electric batteries but the reading said that they are unlikely are used as electeric batteries and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the argument that the author mentioned is not convincing and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that there is no evidence that any metal wires were located near the vessels. The professor refutes this point by saying that these clay jars are found by local people who are not trained archeologists. He states that they might found some wires and they just threw them away because they did not understand the importance of them.
Second, the article posits that these cylinders inside the jarlooks are exactly like copper cylinders discovered in the Seleucia ruins and were used as holding scrolls of sacred texts and so these clay jars might be used for holding scrolls as well. However, the professor asserts that these instruments could have been originated as holding but they were adapted for other usages.
According to professor its similarity to Seleucia copper cylinders cannot prove that they were used as same purposes.
Third, the reading avers that ancient people did not have any devices that replied on electricity, so the batteries and vessels were useless to them. The professor opposes this point by explaining that these kinds of instrument can be use as a shocker. Based in the lecture some ancient people might use them to convince other that they had some invisible powers. Also, these devices could be used for healing by ancient doctors as a electricity current which is used now by doctors.
