In the reading, the author claims that there are several theories, which contribute to rationales behind the little ice age. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
First of all, the reading passage argues that due to warmer weather before the little ice age, changing gulf stream is responsible for decreasing the temperature and onset of ice age. Conversely, the lecturer refutes this point by explaining that scientists know that disrupting the ocean stream just affects Europe and North America. However, the little ice age occurred in the southern hemisphere such as New Zealand and south Africa.
Furthermore, the author mentions that dark cloud of dust, which were resulted from volcanic eruption is one of the reasons of forming the little ice age. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with this opinion. According to him, the dusts which came from volcanic eruptions would have visible effects such as colorful sunset and gray or brown snow. However, there was no evidence to prove these visual impacts of dark cloud's dust.
Finally, the reading holds the view that the temperature was decreased because of absorbing a great deal of carbon dioxide by trees in order to fewer farmlands cut for feeding people. In contrary, the professor claims that the human population during that time grew back quickly. Therefore, the people tried to cut the trees for producing crops as a food source. Thus, there was not enough time for absorbing carbon dioxide by trees.
