The only way to reduce the amount of traffic in cities today is by reducing the need for people to travel from home for work, education or shopping.
To what extent do you agree or disagree
In my personal opinion, I would like to believe that traffic congestions are inevitably linked to the degree of urbanization. There are both simple and complex ways to combat this matter. Some environmentalists believe that the only method to curb this problem would be by reducing the need to travel for work and education as well as for shopping. I, on the other hand dissent the fact that we need to implement such measures in order to reduce the amount of traffic.
In this day and age, marked urbanization is indicated by packed public transports mainly buses and long queues at the bus stops. Many of us are aware of such situations and yet we still choose to ignore it simply because it is the one and only city center which provides great employment opportunities, good medical facilities and better access to educational system. In addition to these, it is the expanding urbanization which has contributed to a higher standard of living. As a result, productivity and consumerism increases. Hence the need for shopping for necessities too increases.
Instead of cutting the need to travel, we actually have a choice by encouraging the people to car pool when they are travelling to their workplace or to schools. This indeed has an additional contribution as it indirectly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide floating in the air. Moreover, by reducing the number of cars on the roads will also have a major impact on the air and noise pollution. Furthermore, it also would decrease the level of traffic congestion. Besides that, since people nowadays have the tendency to move out from the old city centres to the suburban areas, more shopping complexes should be set up near these areas. This may have a positive effect on the rising number of traffic.
In a nut shell, I think by reducing the number people traversing are definitely not a remedy for this problem. The level of urbanization is expected to rise. It is in fact just a matter of time whether the increase is steadily or dramatically and this is going to have an impact on the traffic. Although, measures like working from home, hiring a private tutor and limiting the number of shopping complexes may seem to work however its acceptance may vary due to them being not cost effective.
