Seniority (years of service) should not be the basis of employee compensation. Employees should be promoted and given raises solely on the basis of their work performance and merit. That is a better way to encourage high productivity.
The discussion of the issue among companies and in the society as a whole has come into vogue during the last decade. In my point of view, i agree with the speaker for some obvious reasons.
First, it goes without saying that performance and merit conducts the job, not seniority. In order to see this point clearly, let us see an example. For example, think of a worker who has been working for a company and 60 years old. Do you think he could do the same job at the same rate as a young worker does? Of course not. it is true for mental works and labor works as well. A young computer engineer and also a worker could perform highly than an older engineer or worker. So, to promote seniority against performance and merit is not well reasoned thinking .
The further reason why i have such a view is that inequality between performance and wage may discourage employees who has merit and high performance. If a company promotes senior people , young employees will think that there is no need to work hard to get promoted because he or she will not be promoted for the reason that they are not seniors and their hard working will be neglected.
However, that is not to say that seniority is not important. Seniority means experience an employee gained during his whole life. Of course it is gonna bear some importance. For instance, think of a group of scientists working on a subject to invent an gadget. It is highly possible that senior ones will be more productive due to their experience but we cannot neglect the possibility of new employee`s coming with a marvelous idea leading to inventing that gadget.
From what has been discussed above we may safely draw that seniority should not be the basis of employee compensation, they should be promoted according to their performance and mer'it/
