Universities should require all of its students to take a variety of courses outside the students field of study.
Universities need it's students to take a variety of courses outside their field of study. What could be the impact of these courses if students need to take them? Is it the role of universities to foster students skills by persuading each and every one of them to take a variety of courses outside their academic curriculum? Then, what will be the positive effect of studying courses outside their field? According to Prof. Wole Soyinka, " Studying courses outside students academic field serve as a bulster to enhance their knowledge and also make them to be versatile, and ready for any kind of work in the labor market".
Let's talk about the usefulness of studying different courses outside an individuals field of study. Now, we all know that the world is changing every day, and for a graduate to be able to stand the test of time (to fit in and be useful in his/her field), they need to have a little bit of knowledge outside their field. There have been complains from different companies lamenting that schools (Universities) produce graduates that are not well established. For example, in so many organizations in the world today, there are lots of competitions, and for one to have a chance to secure a good job in the future, he needs to know or have different kind of skills that will serve as a pass for getting a job. In addition, students needs to take a variety of courses; off course this will help to prepare them for the task ahead; that is the main reason why students do have an intern while schooling.
Another important role of studying courses outside one's field is to allow the student to gain some knowledge. There is no knowledge that is gained to be lost or useless but will always be useful when the need arises. Such a case, we talk about a student in a university studying Literature, he/she should be curious to know a lot about computers, knowing fully well that different organization's need workers who have a knowledge in operating the computer; sending of e-mail, typing documents and saving data's (Information) etc. With the above example, I don't think that a business organization will employ such a worker when they have so many applicants who can fit into the job immediately without going into any rudimentary training.
If schools (Universities) need to make all of it's students to take variety of courses outside there field of study, it should be an encouragement and not a stringent rule to force one to study what he or she does not like. For instance, if a student does not perform very well in his/jer field when different courses are added to his/her syllabus, then he/she should be allowed to make his/her own decision. No one can perform very well in any activity when they are indifferent to learn it.
However, Universities serve as a guadian to direct it's students to better goals. What ever that may be, that will enhance individual ability to perform well in the labor market always come from accumulating different knowledge and skill.
In conclusion, studying a variety of courses outside students academic field will always be an advantage that will help them to secure a job in the future. Many companies need workers who are versatile to cope with different challenges while working. With this reason, students need to be always ready to face any challenge that is likely to occur after graduating. A student who is skilled enough outside his/her field will always come out successfully (Previal) when they are in their mettle.
