TPO 27 integrated writing : Little Ice Age
In the reading, the author claims that the cause of the abnormal little ice age, which was occurred from 1350 until 1900 C.E., is known through three viable reasons. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally casts doubt on what is claimed in the text and present some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the cold current which had entered into the Gulf Stream due to melted glaciers was the main responsible for occurring this phenomenon. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the cold current would have effected only Europe and North American, whereas the ice age observed on South hemisphere - including News land and South Africa - as well. Thus, altering in the Gulf Stream cannot account for the sever climates changes associated to these regions.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that huge amount of dust, coming from vast volcanic eruptions, obstructed the sunlight, thereby happening little ice age in that era. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that scientifically, clouds of dust could have such ramifications on a large scale. Nevertheless, if volcanic eruption had been the cause, it would have been accompanies by some visual effects such as colorful sunset and gray or brown snow instead of white. According to this issue that no record was reported such harbingers, the volcanic activities were not strong enough to generate this cool environment.
Finally, the author asserts that decreasing the population and its subsequent environmental impact is to blame for cool climate. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that in spite of the fact that the decrease in the numbers of people is true it by no means did not last long enough to be in impactful. Indeed, the population soon rebounded and they needed to cut the trees in order to clear the fields and prepare sufficient food for the growing population. Consequently, the forests could not render weather cold that much.
