Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific theories presented in the reading passage. The invasion of the zebra mussel
The reading and listening materials have a conflict of opinions about the invasion of the zebra mussel, which is a freshwater shellfish spreads out from its habitat in Eastern Europe and their populations have a threat of new habitat. The reading explains three reasons that their invasions cannot be stopped. However, in the listening passage, the speaker disagrees with the writer's opinions and he believes that this problem could not solve because of the lack knowledge of human in the past and nowadays we know about solutions.
First of all, the reading passage refers to this point that this animal was transported to the North America by ships. On the other hand, according to the professor, this is true that human had a role to their transportations but they do not survive and they are killed in the ocean so that it is possible to avoid their threats.
Second, in the reading, the writer indicates that their populations increase as soon as possible because they do not have predators in a new place and their rates of reproduction are high. By contrast, the lecturer makes it clear that this fact is true in the beginning of their place entrance. After a while, other animals like birds eat them and can be controlled by these factors.
As a final point, the writer refers to this point that this animal competes with others to eat plankton and it has a negative impact on the new place. In contrast, according to the speaker, the chain food changes this fact and other factors can control the size of the population of zebra mussels.
To sum up, the reading and listening passage do not agree about the invasion of zebra mussels which is considered as a threat.
