In the reading passage, the author claims that the zebra mussel, a shellfish species living in freshwater, presents serious problems for the freshwater fishes by pointing out three reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and states that indeed, there are some solutions to hinder population growth of the zebra mussel. He points out some evidence to refute the ideas mentioned in the reading.
At first, the author argues that having conveyed the zebra mussel by the ships, they assist scattering its population across new regions in the United States. The lecturer brings up the fact that it was true in the past due to lack of knowledge. For instance, previously, having carried the freshwater of Europe, ballast water which facilitates expanding the zebra mussel, ships would have poured it in the United States water. In comparison, nowadays, not only are ships capable to function without freshwater, but they also do have capacity to become laden with salt water of ocean while they are not presence in the ocean. Hence, the zebra cannot survive in salt water and wipe out.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the zebra mussel population can enormously multiply due to absence of any predator. On the other hand, the professor disputes this point by clarifying the fact that although, it is true, merely, the commencement of their colonization, there are some other species which are seeking to find new food resources. As an example, the zebra mussel can be accounted as good food for birds. Therefore, they cannot remain as a dominant species in their new habitat for a long time.
Finally, the author asserts that the zebra mussel causes a substantial drop in the overall fish population. The lecturer, though, dismisses this idea by subscribing the fact that the decline occur in the population of plankton eaters fish. As a matter of fact, the zebra mussel produces nutrition in their habitat which provides suitable environment for nourishing fish species in the bottom of water.
