The lecture and the reading both discuss the extinction of the marine mammal sea cow. Which, the reading states three theories to support the main causes of the sea cow extinction the lecture refutes this saying non of the theory are convening and each one of the theory has a problem.
First of all, the reading claims that over hunting of the ea cow by Siberian people id the main cause of the extinction. However, the lecture argues that the sea has a massive size. Furthermore, the professor states that a couple sea cows can feed the Siberians population; there was no need for over hunting.
In addition, the reading makes the argument that because the ecosystem disturbance the sea cow food decline which is the kelp, subsequently cause decline in the sea cow population. the lecture counter this point stating that there were no experience of food shortage. According to the professor if the was a disturbance in the ecosystem it will also affect other mammals not only the kelp, but there were no evidence of any effect on whales for example, the population of whales stay the same.
Lastly, the reading passage argues that European traders are other cause in the extinction of the sea cow. They caught the last cow on 1768. The lecture refutes this claims by pointing out that the sea cow population were already decrease in there numbers before the arrival of the European. Moreover, the professor says that soon after the European arrive to the area the sea cow extinct. The professor mentions that main cause of the extinction still unknown.
