The author expresses some hypotheses which explain the possible reasons for the decline in the yellow cedar population. The lecturer, however, refutes the hypotheses since he thinks they are not convincing and do not provide enough information.
First, it is mentioned that the insect parasites, especially the cedar bark beetle, which attack (invade/assail) the tree may cause this decrease, but the teacher points out to the chemical substances on the tree which protects it from such insects. This powerful substance makes the tree resistant against insect attacks. For this reason, it seems unlikely that this assumption can be the responsible.
Second hypothesis is connected with brown bears; consume the tree bark due to its high value of sugar. Nevertheless, the professor rejects the claim by providing two concrete pieces of evidence. One is that the animal eats the wood which is not alive anymore. In other words, brown bears eat the damaged barks which will kill very soon. In addition, by comparing the mainland and Island, two are the habitats of the yellow cedar, it reveals the fact that the decline has been occurred in both regions, although there is not any brown bear in the Island area.
Finally, some scientists believe that the gradual change in the climate condition brings about the harmful impact on the given tree. On the contrary, the lecturer casts doubt on this statement, since the higher elevation is associated with a cooler weather and the lower elevation usually has a warmer climate. Hence, according to this assumption, it is expected that the region with higher elevation possesses many further trees but in practice, it is not correct.
