The reading passage briefly outlines three hypotheses trying to explain the potential reason for the steadily decreasing number of cedar trees. The lecturer refutes these hypotheses due to the following reasons.
First, the decline in the number of cedars can't be ascribed to insects. Cedars contain a powerful chemical which kills insects. The records which were alluded in the reading merely show insects feeding on sick or died trees.
Second, brown bears can not be responsible for the decline. Cedars are perishing in all areas of the northwestern North America. Some of these areas are not brown bear's habitat. So, the trees die out with or without brown bears.
Third, climate does not account for the decline. Even though it is true that the fine surface roots start growing in winter, and hence, are prone to freezing, it can't be concluded that climate is the primary reason for the reduction of the trees; the trees in higher elevation are open to lower temperatures but are dying out at a slower pace.
Overall, the lecturer believes that none of the hypotheses presented in the reading give a comprehensive view on why the cedars are declining.
