TPO 23
The author postulates several reasons for the decline in yellow cedar tree's population. The lecturer, however, explains that points made by the author are not sufficient, and he is not right about them.
First, the author states that insect parasites, specifically cedar bark beetles, could be a contributing factor to yellow cedar decline. On the contrary, the lecturer asserts that healthy trees have chemical compounds in their leaves with which the trees become resistant to parasites. For this reason, insects can only infest dammaged trees, and those that will die in near future. Thus, insects are not causing the population decline.
Second, the author contends that brown bears also contribute to yellow cedar decline, providing that they claw cedars in order to consume their high sugar barks. On the otherhand, the lecturer argues that yellow cedar decline in areas in which no brown bears exists, indicates that brown bears are not considered as a major contributing factor.
Third, the author believes that climate changes towards colder climates makes yellow cedars' roots vulnerable to freezing. In contrast, the lecturer suggests that population decline in warmer regions has been higher than colder regions', therefore, climate could not be a considerable factor.
