The author points out to some possible causes which are usually regarded as the possibilities of mass-extinction event before dinosaurs emerged. The lecturer, however, rolls out the mentioned hypothesis and offers some counterclaims to indicate that none of them is convincing.
First, according to the reading, fluctuation of sea level might have been one of the reasons since during that period, water level altered periodically. As a result, the animals extinction might led to a noticeable effect on food chain. Nonetheless, the professor refutes the claim due to the fact that it most probably happed gradually. Although it is completely true that sea level changed, often went down, in that time, it could not have great impact on the environment, on the grounds that it is merely affected when there is an abrupt change in environment.
Second, the sulfur dioxide resulted from volcanic activities can be the other possible explanation for the disappearance of numerous animals. This gas may decrease the earth's temperature, and animals became extinct. On the contrary, the professor casts doubt on the statement. He mentions the fact that such terrible gases most likely come back to the earth by rainfall. Therefore, it is implausible that the amount of SO2 were a lot which rain could not clear it out.
Third, when asteroids hit earth surface it brought about a reduce in temperature of earth, caused by the soil and crashed rock went up to the air and block the sunlight, which is considered the last probable answer for why a large proportion of creatures vanished. Conversely, the speaker rejects the claim by mentioning some other aspects of asteroid impact. As a matter of fact, this event occurred twelve million years before the extinction. Hence, there is not any connection between the extinction process and asteroids strike.
