There has been some debate among weather the vessels excavated in Iraq used as batteries or not. The lecturer says that the vessels were used as batteries. However, the author of the reading argues that the vessels were not actually used as batteries in the ancient time and enumerates three reasons of support.
The first point of dispute is the absence of the wires. The lecture argues that the vessels were discovered by local people, which mean that there may be other materials found with the vessels but the people consider that materials less important. So the wires may be discovered but , thrown away, or the local people may be un interested in them. However, the reading contraindicate this point saying that if the vessels were used as batteries they will need wires to conduct the electricity.
Another controversial issue, is that the copper cylinder look the same as the copper cylinder discovered in the ruins of the Seleucia. The professor said that in the ancient time the cylinders were used to hold scrolls, but by time the cylinder purpose were changed to be used as a batteries. According to the professor, the cylinders could be used as batteries by gathering liquid and some clays, that was how the ancient used them as batteries. On the other hand, the author of the reading refutes this point by saying that the cylinders were used to hold scrolls in the Seleucia.
The final point of dispute is that there was no need for electricity in the ancient time . The professor argues that the batteries in the ancient time were causing mild shock or tingling sensation, and some people were used this as a magical power to convince others. Second, in ancient time some doctors were used batteries for healing and relieve pain. But, the reading argues that in ancient time there was no devises rely on electricity so there was no need for the batteries.
