The reading claims that Chevalier distorted or changed his memoir to make his life more exciting and provides three points. However, the professor explains that chevalier's memoir is accurate and reliabe and refutes each of author's reasons.
First, the reading say that if chevalier was a rich person who spend a lot money on parties and gambling, does not borrow money from a swiss merchant. Conversly, the professor oppose this point saying that Chevalier was very wealthy and he has a lot of property and spend money on parties and gambling. One of reason he borrow money from swiss merchant was that he did not have money and the process of convert property to money take some time.
Second, based on the reading, chevalier wirtes his conversation with famous writer voltaire after many years and it is not feasible to remember exact phrases. Nevertheless, the speaker states that chevalier each night after his talk with famus writer Voltaire, write their conversation and other people confirm that he talk about his writed note with other people such as jurnalists.
Third, according to the reading, chevalier escape from prison by making a hole in ceiling is not true and he bribes jailers and they let him run away. In contrast, the lecturer contradict this point reasoning that there were many people in the jail that have more political power than Chevalier and they could not bribe jailer. Also, old documents from past show that day after Chevalier's escape from prison in venice, ceil of jail repair and this show that he run away from prison by making a hole in the ceiling.
Therefore, the specific points mentioned in the reading is not make sense.
