The reading passage claims that there are many skeptical attitudes towards fossilized bees' nests structures that they were created by bees 200 million years ago in the State of Arizona in America. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author contends that no fossils remain of actual bees have been found and the earliest fossilized structures are dated to 100 million years ago. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although it is true that there are no remains of fossils, bees never preserved their nests because they preserved their nest in a sticky substance in trees called resin and since then their nest disappeared as trees' resin disappeared.
Furthermore, the author holds the view that modern bees often feed on flowering plants and in that time there were not any plants to provide food for bees and these plants appeared 125 million years ago. On the contrary, the professor underlines this idea due to the fact that bees existed before these flowering plants and they fed on nonflowering plants species like pine trees. In fact, there is a possibility that they adopted to flowering plants in later time.
Finally, as set forth by the author in spite of founding these fossilized structures near Arizona, we should cast doubt owing to the paucity of details of structures and lack of caps in their chambers. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that there is a chemical substance in these structures that prove bees used caps in a chamber. Indeed, bees used distinctive and special waterproof materials that are still usable with modern bees.
