Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons
In this set of materials, the author of the reading passage expresses three advantages of establishing colonies of humans to live and work on an asteroid. However, the professor thinks that the author’s reasons contain some defects.
First of all, the author states that asteroids have lower gravity, so it makes the spaceship land safer than landing on the Moon or Mars. On the contrary, the professor indicates that the low gravity presents some risks for the human. In the low gravity circumstance, human will lose muscles and lose bone density. It already happened when astronauts stay in the spacecraft, not to mention the long-term, what will influence the people.
In addition, the author claims that because some asteroids have valuable elements such as gold and platinum, by sending them back to Earth, it would pay for the colonists cost. However, the professor asserts that there is some additional cost such as transportation. Furthermore, it no guarantees that the elements still remain the same price. The reason is that if the supplies of the elements increase, It would lower the element’s market price. Therefore, there is not profitable for sending these elements back to Earth.
Finally, the author raises the point that some of the asteroids are easy to reach. Unlike Mars, it would require a two-year trip in each direction. Asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back. On the other hand, the professor refutes the author’s idea by saying that it is easy to reach asteroids; however, to return it would be a challenge, due to asteroids’ orbit are unusual. Some asteroids may close to the earth, then one point, they may move away from Earth and travel the great distance. Hence, there would be a challenge for the colonist to travel back to Earth that far.
