Some people believe that corporations have a responsibility to promote the well-being of the societies and environments in which they operate. Others believe that the only responsibility of corporations, provided they operate within the law, is to make as much money as possible.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
It is a debatable issue that what the responsibilities of corporations to their societies and environments are. Even though companies might not be hold responsible from these projects, spending money on these issues instead of ignoring social and environmental problems is more likely to provide higher returns to them. Hence, corporations should promote well-being of their society.
One might think that corporations create job opportunities for the people in this society; hence they do not have any responsibility regarding the well-being of that state. Even though this idea has some merit, it should not be accepted without questioning it. For example, although companies provide ways for individuals to gain money, thus they increase the income of country; but they might also damage the environment. The process that is used in the production of several goods might bring about pollution, and money that is needed reconstruction might be tremendous. Governments and other institutions should not be responsible from fixing the problems created by these corporations. Hence, companies should focus on improving the conditions of the environment in which they operate.
Besides the money that should be spent on the environment, companies should also devote money for social projects since they eventually benefit from the results of these attempts. The purchasing power of individuals might increase due to the projects that are supported by corporations. For example, in my country several organizations have been conducted to increase the level of education of young girls. As a result of these attempts, number of university graduates would increase. Hence, these people are more likely to get well-paid jobs than a high school or primary school graduate. Thus, their purchasing power would increase. The economic environment in the country might improve, and ultimately the company would observe the positive impacts of the economic condition as increase in their profit.
In addition to promoting the purchasing power of individuals, providing funds for social and environmental projects might improve the public image of that corporation. Hence, they might attract more clientele and their revenues would increase. For example, there is increasing concern about the future of environment because of this reason people endeavor to use products that are produced in sustainable manners. In addition, consideration a company shows to the social projects are more likely to be observed by significant number of people because these projects can be easily reached many people on Internet. Since the people find these ideas important, these projects might promote the market share of the company. Hence, they would enjoy by higher profit margins.
As a result, companies should devote money on social and environmental projects in order to compensate the damage they create on environment. They might more likely to observe the benefits of the social projects as increase in their profit.
