The article states that archeologist trying to understand how settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico used their massive house. and provide 3 theories of usage of the houses. However, the professor claims that their evidence is not convincing and refutes each author's reasons
First, the reading states that the houses were purely residential with each housing contains one hundreds of people. The professor refutes this point by claiming that outside the houses were similar to the Taos but inside of it cast doubts the idea since there were not many fireplaces for cooking. Even for the largest house, the fireplaces were sufficient for 10 families. However, 500 families could live in this house.
Second, the article states claims that people stored maize in their house. However, the professor contends that it could sound plausible, but there not many traces of maize in the house. If they used the house for storing maize, there should be enough spoiled maize on the ground.
Third, the reading avers that researchers found broken pots in a mund close to the one of the Chaco Canyon house, and it shows they used houses for ceremonies. The lecturer opposite this point by stating that there were lots of other material in the mound include building and construction material. it shows that they piles were used for wasted material rather than merely broken pots
