The pie chart and the table illustrate the percentage of degraded land globally and their causes by region in 1990s. Overall it is evident that, by region, Europe ranked topped in terms of total land degradation while North America witnessed least percentage of land degradation. There is no substantial difference in percentage between the three main causes namely deforestation, over-cultivation and overgrazing of land degradation worldwide.
Over-cultivation and overgrazing, these two human acts account for around two third of total land degradation globally, while another less than one third land 30 % was degraded by deforestation. Others cause account of 7 % of land loss worldwide.
In Europe, deforestation attributed around one tenth of total land degradation, however it had minimal impact on degradation in North America and Oceania region. Deforestation only account for 0.2% and 1.7% land loss in North America and Oceania region respectively. Surprisingly, over-cultivation was the 2nd major of land loss in Europe, while it caused roughly two third of total land degradation in North America.
In Oceania region over three fourth lands was loss by overgrazing, however over-cultivation had no impact on land loss in Oceania region. Overgrazing was 2nd most important cause of land degradation in North America and it caused 5.5% land loss in Europe.
