Topic: life cycle of salmon (task 1, test 4, cambridge ielts 10)
The diagrams illustrate the life span of salmon from its early stage to adulthood with specific illustrations and statistics.
Overall, a typical salmon spends nearly 10 years of its whole life to grow and reproduce. During its life cycle, migrating to different habitats is a crucial step which provides a compatible environment for every physical stage.
Firstly, upper river is where adult salmons lay their eggs avoiding the effect of fast moving stream which can flush them away. Salmon eggs are laid in the gaps between small tones and reeds. From there, they spend five to six months in egg shells before moving to their next stage. Once the eggs are hatched, baby fishes called fry which measure about three to eight cm in length start to migrate to lower river and spend there four years growing.
Secondly, salmons called smolts enter their next stage when they are about 15 cm long. Since when, they migrate to open sea and spend 5 years until they reach their full size of 70 to 76 cm in length. Adult salmons then go on a journey back to upper river to lay eggs and the cycle is repeated.
