The reading and the lecture are both about yellow cedar trees in northwestern North America. The author mentioned that three hypothesis to support that there are massive decline in population of yellow cedar tree. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that the cause of the decline in yellow cedar was attack by insect parasites. The author believes that cedar trees are attacked by beetle, also, beetle larvae eat the wood. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the condition of cedar tree was healthy and can repel insect infestation, so, the bark of the trees are saturated with powerful chemical, as a result, insects away getting near it. Furthermore, He argues that beetles only attack tree which is unhealthy.
Secondly, the author contends that brown bears eat on the bark of the yellow cedar. The article establishes that they love to claw at the bark of the cedar because it is mainly high in sugar, hence, the excessive eating of the trees is responsible for the decline of the trees. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the decline of yellow cedar tree is not to blamed to the brown bear. He elaborates on this by mentioning that the decline in number of cedar trees are seen in Main land and in some island in United States, but, brown bear doesn't reside in these areas.
Finally, the author states that climate change may be the cause. The article notes that changes in the climate affects fine root surface and it is sensitive from harsh environment. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that trees are dying even if the temperature is rapidly changing overtime. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that yellow cedar trees are still dying even if the temperature is constant.
